Deaf

Each September Deaf Awareness Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the Deaf community. This month we reflect on the barriers that still exist and emphasize that true inclusion requires more than just awareness; it calls for intentional advocacy and actionable change.

A common misconception is that lip reading alone provides sufficient access to communication. While it’s helpful for some, it’s far from a complete solution. By taking a closer look at the limitations of lip reading and the role of captioning, we can shift towards building spaces where everyone can fully engage with confidence.

Lip Reading isn’t a Universal Solution

Contrary to popular belief, not all Deaf or individuals with hearing loss use lip reading, and those who do often face frustrating challenges. In fact, only 30-45% of speech can be accurately understood through lip reading, even by skilled readers. That means that the majority of a conversation relies on context clues, body language, and guesswork. Add in factors like poor lighting, rapid speech, accents, people covering their mouths, or background noise and lip reading becomes even more difficult—if not impossible.

Never assume someone can or prefers to lip read. Each person has their own learning style or communication preferences, and everyone deserves the chance to choose what works best for them.

Awareness is Only the First Step

Deaf Awareness Month is about amplifying the voices of a diverse community, while also recognizing the everyday barriers that persist. Too often inclusion efforts stop at surface-level awareness: a social media post, a brief mention in a meeting, or the assumption that lip reading is “good enough.”

True inclusion asks more of us. It challenges us to reimagine how our schools, workplaces, events, and content are built and who they include or exclude. Captioning isn’t just “nice to have.” It’s an essential tool that fills the gaps left by lip reading and spoken communication. Captions bring clarity, confidence, and equal access to conversations that might otherwise leave people behind.

What Makes Captions so Powerful?

Captions do what lip reading simply can’t. They convey everything from background sounds and tone to off-screen dialogue and environmental cues. Whether it’s a video, a live conference, or a virtual training, captions provide an inclusive experience for people with hearing loss and benefit everyone, including those learning a new language or viewing content in a noisy (or silent) environment.

Unlike lip reading, captions aren’t impacted by facial hair, speaking speed, or dim lighting. They offer real-time accuracy, context, and autonomy, putting the power of understanding back into the hands of the viewer or participant.

Let’s Normalize Asking, Not Assuming

Creating accessible environments starts with asking. Ask your co-workers, students, or guests what communication tools they prefer and what helps them feel included.

If someone chooses to lip read, support them by:

  • Facing them directly when speaking
  • Avoiding chewing gum or covering your mouth
  • Speaking clearly (but naturally) without exaggeration
  • Being patient and willing to repeat or rephrase

If someone prefers captioning—whether it’s during a live meeting or watching a video—make sure it’s available and accurate.

Be a Captioning Advocate, This Month and Beyond

Deaf Awareness Month is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a chance to reflect, listen, and take meaningful steps in the right direction. True access isn’t achieved by assuming what someone needs but by giving people real choices and support. This month challenges us to go beyond surface-level awareness and start making real changes that foster inclusion in every space.

At Caption Pros, we’re proud to help lead that change. Our team of award-winning captioners partner with organizations, event planners, schools, and employers to bring real-time captioning to the forefront, so that everyone has the opportunity to be seen, heard, and fully included. Whether you’re organizing a workplace training, hosting a community event, or rethinking your digital content strategy, accessibility should be a priority—not an afterthought.
